Donku Japanese Restaurant (Oahu, Hawaii)

6/11/2016 Saturday

Today is my mom's 65th birthday, so we took her to a nice Japanese restaurant, Donku on Waikiki and we had a great time. We saw some sumo wrestlers walking by while waiting for the restaurant.

The food was really delicious and after the main course, we ordered dessert for mom.

Macky's Shrimp Truck (Oahu, Hawaii)

6/11/2016 Saturday

We tried the coconut and garlic shrimp which was pretty good. The owners chatted with us and turns out that they were also from Taiwan. My brother and my parents tried the spicy shrimp and they love it as well.

Day 2 -- Oahu, Hawaii

6/11/2016 Saturday

It's our second day at Oahu and we decided to spend the day exploring North Shore and dropping by different places on our way there.

After breakfast at the hotel, we started our journey and our first stop was the Dole Plantation.

We went on the plantation train ride which was about 20 minutes ride through the field and saw many different crops such as chocolate, sugar cane, lychee, banana and of course pineapple as well. Did you know that pineapple is actually not native to Hawaii? They originated from South America and were brought to Hawaii and grown there. Dole plantation provides pineapples to 90% of canned pineapples worldwide.

After the train ride, we tried the Dole Whip and it was quite tasty with some tangy taste. With that, we decided to move on to our next destination for lunch. We picked Macky's shrimp truck which is about 5-10 minutes away.

I have a separate post on the food.

After a fulfilling lunch, we traveled more north towards our next destination, which is the Haleiwa Alli Beach. We wanted to go there as I was researching online and saw that this beach was well known for  the green sea turtles (aka Honu). The beach was nice but I have been to many more beautiful beaches. While the kids were playing/swimming in the ocean and the dads looking after them, I was trying to look to see if I can spot the sea turtles.

Initially, I was disappointed as I didn't see any sea turtles right after we got off the parking lot, so I looked far to the West and there was no crowd, thus I thought there was probably no sea turtles there. I looked towards the East and couldn't see much of the beach there as it was on a lower level and blocked by some plants/bushes, so I walked towards there.

After getting closer to that side of the beach, I could vaguely see some animals on the sand and as I squirt my eyes, I could see that there were 3 green sea turtles there. I was so happy and called out to everyone to come and check the turtles out. We tried to keep a distance between the animals as I have read about the warnings and giving the animals some space since some of them might be nesting.

There is another famous beach which is well known for spotting sea turtles and it's called the Laniakea Beach. Below is a map that I had mapped out for the trip but since the kids were tired, we stopped at the Haleiwa Alli Beach and decided to head back instead of going more north.

On the way back, we wanted to stop by Matsumoto Shave ice since they were famous. But when we saw the long line and no parking space, we decided to just head back to the hotel.

After we reached the hotel, the kids went straight to the pool and played for an hour or so before we went for dinner.

I have a separate post on the food.

Afterwards, we bought shave ice for the kids since we couldn't get it at Matsumoto earlier and it's their first shave ice for the trip.

Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort (Oahu, Hawaii)

June 10, 2016 Friday

Our hotel for Oahu is Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort. One of the reasons that I picked this hotel is that it is across from Embassy Suite where my brother and his family are staying. Another reason is that it offers complimentary vow renewal and is right on the beach. The vow renewal is offered every Tuesday and Friday at this hotel and at Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort, it is every Mondays ad Thursday.

The hotel only has valet parking and like most hotels charges resort fee which include a tote bag, 2 bottles of water each day, coffee and tea, free wi-fi, free daily activities. We didn't go to any of the free activities as we were usually not at the hotel during those times.

The hotel amenities is average for a 4 star hotel. It only has 1 pool and the gym is small. But I like that when we check in, they gave us a very delicious drink and a wet towel to wipe our hands/face. I love the drink and it tasted like passion fruit sparking soda. They also have beautiful fresh orchids at the check in counter.

The rooms are pretty decent size and clean. They also have a large balcony and some nights, I would just sit there and enjoy the breeze. This is also where I was when I saw the fireworks from the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Friday nights.

Day 1 -- Oahu, Hawaii

6/10/2016 Friday

The flight to Hawaii was pretty quick, less than 5 hours and we arrive in the beautiful island of Oahu. Since we took different flights from my brother and parents, we had to wait for them. Their scheduled flight was supposed to be 20 minutes after our arrival but unfortunately, their flight has some maintenance issues and was delayed for about 2 hours. So, we stayed at the airport to wait for them.

Once they arrived, we took the shuttle to pick up our rental car. One tip for the shuttle car: check in online so that you can skip the line at the rental car.

We booked a full size car and was upgraded to a Jeep free of charge which was pretty cool.  We drove to Chinatown to have some lunch since it was too early to check in our hotel.

We went to Fort Street Cafe (1152 Fort St. Mall, Honolulu, HI 96813) as it had good reviews in Yelp but unfortunately, the cafe was closed since the owners went on vacation. So, we had lunch at the Korean restaurant next door which was pretty good as well.

After lunch, we walked through the main business district till we reached Iolani Palace which is the only royal palace left on American soil. Then we walked to the State Capitol Building which is right behind the Palace. The large pool of water that surrounds the building symbolizes that Hawaii is the only state in U.S. which is on an island.

Across from the street is the King Kamehameha statue, we saw a lot of people there and there were a lot of leis on the statue. We were wondering what was the occasion and found out later that the next day was the 100th anniversary of the King and there was going to be a parade.

Afterwards, we walked back to the business district to Chinatown. We went to the Maunakea Marketplace and check out the stalls there before walking back to the parking garage. By this time, it was late afternoon and we started driving to our hotel which is in the heart of Waikiki.

We checked in to our hotel and after putting our luggages, we took the kids to the pool as they were waiting all day to get into the water.

I also want to wish my parents a very Happy 40th wedding anniversary. I am so glad that all of us can join this celebration in Hawaii. This will be a very memorable memory for all of us.

After the swim, we went back to our room to change and while we were there, I heard a loud noise and realize that it was the weekly Friday fireworks from Hilton Hawaiian Village. Our room was facing the place where the fireworks are being set off, so we had a good view of the fireworks on the balcony.

We went to the main street of Waikiki and were amazed at the crowd. It turns out that there was the annual Pan Pacific Festival which was started today and ending on Sunday. The street was closed and there were many food stalls and performances.

We started our day with some hiccups but towards the end of the day, it was a blessing as we get to join the festival and see the performances. Later, we went to a famous Japanese Udon place named Marukame Waikiki and had some udon. The cool thing about this restaurant is that they make their noodles fresh and you can watch them while you queue up for the food.

We had the Ontama udon which had an egg and the Niku udon which had beef in it. I personally think the food is just okay and was surprised at the huge crowd and long queue. If you like beef, then I suggest that you get the Niku udon as that is their most popular udon and the best one that we tried. After getting the noodles, there is a long display of food that you can choose and put it on a separate plate so that it doesn't get soggy. There was fried shrimp, fish cake, chicken, vegetables, etc. The kids picked the fried chicken and I tried one. It was one of the worst fried chicken that I ever had. Now I miss Popeye's fried chicken!
