Day 1 - San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico

12/31/2017 Sunday

Itinerary:
  • Check in at Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos

The kids are off school for 2 weeks, so we decided to take a vacation around new year since we wanted to spend Christmas with our family this year as we probably would be travelling next Christmas. We planned a 6 day trip to Los Cabos in Mexico. It's a short direct flight from California, which makes it a great relaxing vacation spot for us.

We wanted an all inclusive hotel and after doing some research, we decided to pick Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos due to its good reviews. The hotel is located in San Jose Del Cabo area which is the more quiet town in Los Cabos.

There are 2 areas in Los Cabos:
1. Cabo San Lucas, which is the more lively/party town
2. San Jose Del Cabo, which is the more quiet town

We took a morning flight and after about 2 and a half hours, we landed in the Los Cabos airport. After customs, we went outside the airport to look for our shuttle. The ride to the hotel was less than 20 minutes and we were the first guests to be dropped in our shared shuttle, which is good for us.

The hotel is gated and the driver had to provide our information to the guard in order to get in which I thought was a good feature. Once we were dropped off, we proceed to check in and there wasn't any line so we didn't have to wait long. While checking in, I asked if there would be any special event tonight since it was New Year's eve and was told that there was going to be a party in the main area next to the swimming pool and also fireworks tonight.

After check in, the bell man took our luggage and also showed us around briefly on where the restaurants are. Once we put our belongings inside the room, the kids changed to their swimsuits and we were ready to go explore the hotel since we weren't tired from our flight.

We drop by the snack place next to the pools to order some food and drinks.

After eating, the kids went into the pool while Anthony and I relaxed by the pool. The main pool was not heated, so it was a little cold to swim. The kids went in for a little bit before they moved to the smaller swimming pool by the beach. This swimming pool is heated and has a swim up bar.

While Anthony looked after the kids, I went to the coffee shop next to the lobby for some drinks. I was told that their coffee is better than Starbucks. They also served some light snacks and ice cream.

They also had fruit smoothies which was pretty good. After swimming for a while, we decided to head back to our room and get ready for dinner. When we checked in, the receptionist told us that the hotel was at 98% capacity today, so we were afraid that there would be a line for dinner and wanted to be there early.

I did my research beforehand and the Japanese restaurant Dozo had good reviews. There are 3 sections in the restaurant, one for Teppanyaki, one for sushi bar and another one for regular table. Since it's New Year's eve, we wanted to have some excitement in our dinner, so we picked Teppanyaki. It was a good choice as our chef was both funny and put on a good show.

There is no menu for the Teppanyaki. They give you a choice of shrimp, salmon, chicken and beef with fried rice, edamame and salad/soup. You can also order some sashimi or sushi as well.

After dinner, we went for more coffee and ice cream while Mason went for his nutela crepes.

We hang around the lobby while they were putting on the ice sculptures for tonight.

After we finished taking pictures, we moved to the main area next to the swimming pool to watch the shows they have prepared. After hanging out for a while, we decided to head back to our room to rest and watch the fireworks from our room.

While the kids were taking a shower, I went downstairs to check out other restaurants. I went to the 24 hour deli and they had a limited selection of food.

Then, I went to the buffet restaurant La Plaza and had some lobster and crabs. I was surprised to see lobster in the restaurant and thought it was a regular menu. Later, I found out that it was a special menu due to New Year's Eve and lobster was only served once a year.
