Day 3 -- Pingtung, Taiwan

12/27/2013 Friday

We have plans today to go to Kenting which is in the southernmost part of Taiwan. My parents have booked a hotel there for us as my birthday gift.

We took the high speed rail to Zuoying so that we can take a bus to Kenting.

Once we reached Zuoying station, we walked out and saw a counter selling bus tickets to Kenting. We bought the tickets and boarded the Kenting Express bus outside the station.

After about 2 hours of bus ride, we finally reached our hotel. The hotel that my parents book for us is Caesar Park Hotel Kenting. It is pretty nice. They had complimentary fresh fruits and drinks in our room.

After putting our stuff in our room, we were eager to go out and explore.

It was very windy and cold. Taiwan unlike Singapore has 4 seasons. Although it only snows in the higher elevation mountains during winter but it does get cold.

Based on my experience, I would not recommend coming to Kenting during winter. We didn't get to enjoy the beach as it was too cold and windy. Also, if you want to move around easily, you probably want to rent the moped. Do note that you will have to bring your international driver license as they need to see that in order to rent the moped to you. We didn't have international driver license, so we showed them our California driver license and they won't rent the moped to us.

We walked on the main street of Kenting which is where our hotel is and also where most of the restaurants are.

We found a restaurant and had our lunch there.

After lunch, we walked to the Kenting National Forest Recreation Area.

You could see how windy it was from my hair. It was also very cloudy, so we brought the umbrella from the hotel.

The beach was very pretty, unfortunately, it was too cold to get in.

Next, we walked further and we saw the site where a very famous Taiwan movie (Cape No. 7) took place.

It was getting pretty cold, so we decided to head back to the hotel.
This is the front of the hotel.

We also walked around the swimming pool area. It gives me a feeling of Bali, Indonesia.

Soon, it was time our dinner. Our room package includes breakfast and dinner. We went to the lobby to find out where the restaurant is and also asked them about the tours they have. We booked a tour tomorrow morning for sightseeing around the area.

After a fulfilling dinner, we decided to walk around since we were so full. We discovered their kids/arcade section which was in the basement.

Anthony and I ended up playing pool.

We also saw that they have mahjong room. It is a popular game that most Taiwanese know how to play. My mom loves playing it and when Anthony and I was dating, she made Anthony play with her even though Anthony didn't know how to play since he grew up in the States. My mom taught Anthony how to play. My sister in law who was born in Vietnam and grew up in the States also learned to play Mahjong. I think it's a test that my mom has for her son in law and daughter in law. She can tell whether a person has good sportsmanship or not based on how they play the game. Both my husband and sister in law passed the test with flying colors.

After the game, we were hungry again, so we went to walk on the streets again looking for food.

When we got back to our room, the staff had left a cake for my birthday which was very nice.
