Today, we plan to spend our day at Isla Mujeres (aka Island of the Women). It is a small island in the Caribbean sea on the East side of Cancun and can be reached from Cancun by taking a ferry.
We talked to the tour company regarding this island and the only tour they have is on a sailboat and snorkeling. Since I get seasick easily, so we decided to skip the tour and went on our own.
First, we had to take the bus to the ferry station. When we reached the ferry station, we bought our tickets and also rented the golf cart which will be our main transportation on Isla Mujeres.
While waiting for the ferry, we took a couple of pictures.
The waiting area for the ferry is at the bar of a restaurant.
Soon after, the ferry arrived and we got on the boat. It was a decent size boat but I still felt a little seasick during the ~25 minutes of riding.
When we arrived in Isla Mujeres, we had to get our golf cart. It took us a while to find the place as we weren't familiar with the area. Finally, after asking a few people, we found the place. This is when I wished that I have learnt Spanish. I guess the few years of high school Spanish that Anthony took wasn't enough. All he really could say was "Senorita" and the rest was just plain English. Even I could say that without ever having any Spanish lesson.
Once we got our golf cart, we were excited to start our journey around the island. We passed by their downtown.
Our first stop was to the turtle farm in the south side of the island. We were given a small map when we bought the ferry tickets, so we basically followed the map. They were also signs around the island, which were easy to follow.
After viewing the turtles indoor, we went outdoor where there were more turtles.
Our next stop was to Punta Sur. It is at the Southernmost part of the island. Over there, there is a lighthouse, some sculptures, remains of a temple that was dedicated to Ixchel who is the Maya goddess. On a clear day, you can see Cancun in the distance.
It was a very hot day, so you can see that Anthony had tons of sunblock on his neck. I promise he did took a shower the day before.
It took us about 2 hours to go around the island. After the roundtrip, we went to the beach near the ferry. The beach was Playa Norte and it is the main beach of the island. The beach is very calm and safe for swimming. The kids had fun at the beach while I had a massage right on the beach.
Look at how clear the water is. It was amazingly clear and beautiful. The water was pretty shallow as well.
It was still early for our return ferry, so we went to an open area, so that I could have some fun driving the golf cart.
After that, we went to the ferry station to get back to Cancun. After a short bus ride, we reached our hotel. Went to the pool again and below is a picture that I asked a really tall person to take for us. If you look at the picture, we looked like dwarfs. So, my tip is try not to get a really tall person to take a picture for you, you will look really short in the picture.
Tonight, we are having dinner at the Japanese restaurant again. This is our favorite restaurant.
The food was again great. The kids didn't want to go to bed after dinner, so we took them to the beach to play a little.
