Day 5 -- Tainan, Taiwan

12/22/2016 Thursday

Today is my grandmother's 100th day death anniversary, so we planned a simple ceremony for her in the morning.

We woke up early to have breakfast. I love the squid dumpling noodles at the market while the boys love their burgers.

Tainan is quite different than Taipei as it doesn't have many tourists, so it is hard to see any signs with English words. The menu below doesn't have any English words either, so it is difficult for visitor who doesn't know Mandarin to travel in Tainan. But they usually have pictures on the signs of the restaurants so you can always point to the pictures.

Taipei on the other hand is much more friendly to tourists as most of the menu and signs have English words.

Do note that US$1 ~= TWN $32 (Dec. 2016 rates and will vary). You can see most of the items are less than US$2. The burger and the soymilk that we ordered cost less than US$2.

After we finished our breakfast, we got ready to go to my uncle's house for my grandmother's ceremony. They live close by, so we walked to their house.

One interesting fact of Tainan is that it is a very old town and was the old capital of Taiwan. So, you can find a lot of old buildings in Tainan. Some of the buildings are a few hundred years old. So if you like a little history, then Tainan is a good place to visit.

After the ceremony, we had lunch before heading to ShinKong Mitsukoshi Mall. It is a very big mall and has many different locations. We shopped around the mall as we were going to have dinner with my uncle's family at one of the restaurants in the mall.

Since we had several hours to kill before dinner time, we also went to the bookstore inside the mall to read.

Finally, it was time for dinner and we went to the restaurant. It was an all you can eat seafood buffet. They have a wide selection of food. They also have order to cook station where you can pick what you want and the chef will cook it for you on the spot.

We had a fulfilling dinner before calling it a night.
