Day 7 -- Koh Samui, Thailand

12/29/2018 Saturday

Itinerary:
  • Breakfast at Zest
  • Lunch and dinner at Central Festival Mall
  • Chaweng Beach
We went to breakfast at the hotel as usual and sat outdoors this time.

After breakfast, we decided to walk back to our room as we were so full. And the kids can't wait to jump into the pool. Here's a video of Mason swimming.

The hotel provides free shuttle bus to Chaweng and Lamai beach for guests that stayed at the hotel for 4 or more nights. We had booked the shuttle on our first day here as they get booked quickly since the van can only take about 10 people or so.

Today, we decided to go to Chaweng beach since we were there briefly during our private tour a couple of days ago. There was 3 time slots for the shuttle and we waited for the driver at the lobby.

It took about 1 hour to get to Chaweng Beach. Here's a video.

The driver dropped us off the parking lot at Central Festival Mall and told us to meet there for pick up. Central Festival Mall is the biggest mall in Koh Samui and is an outdoor mall.

Once we arrived, we decide to eat our lunch at the foodcourt. In Thailand, you will have to load cash to a card and use that card to pay for any food in the foodcourt. The way to do it is
  1.  Find the small booth inside the foodcourt with a cashier and pay whatever cash you think you will need to buy the food. The card itself is free and will store the amount of cash you paid.

      2. When you go to order your food at each stall, you use the card to pay for your food.

      3. If you have leftover money in the card, you can always return the card at where you bought it
          for cash back.

It took a little time to get used to this as I have never been to a country where you can't pay cash for food and have to load the cash into a card first.

After lunch, we decided to check out the supermarket next door.

After buying some snacks and drinks, we walked around the mall to check out the different stores.

Next, we decided to venture to Chaweng beach which is across from the mall. We walked along the road and couldn't find any path to the beach.

Finally, we found a place where we can go through to the beach but we were stopped halfway by someone. Even though the beach is free to public but since we are passing the outside of the store, the owner stopped us for money. In order to pass through her store, we have to buy drinks from her. Anthony initially refused to do that as he doesn't feel that we need to pay to access the beach. But I paid because we had been walking around for a while and it was very hot. I know that it was a rip-off because we are tourists but paid for convenience as I don't want to walk any further to find other access to the beach.

Chaweng beach is one of their most popular beach and let's just say that I have seen more beautiful beaches than this. We didn't stayed too long and just took some pictures. We saw people selling food on the beach and it smelled really good but we were afraid to buy due to fear of food poisoning. Before we came to Thailand, we went to see our travel doctor and she prescribed anti-diarrhea pills for us to take in case we run into food poisoning as it is quite common for foreigners in Thailand. She also advised us not to eat any ice.

We returned to the mall and went back to the foodcourt for some dinner before heading back to our hotel.

On the way back to our hotel, it was getting dark.

Here are some snacks that we bought in the supermarket earlier.
